The Trawler at the wharf
asked me
“if I could change one thing what would it be”.
My gaze broke from the horizon
meeting his emerald eyes
“to have gills to keep chasing her when the land runs out”.
This photo was taken in Port Clyde, Maine and this sunset just appeared so quickly out from the clouds before disappearing again. I can recall the small child in me wishing I was a mermaid that could just chase the sun for as long a possible. I imagined next to me an older white beard man in a sun-faded, loose, worn long-sleeve shirt, rolled up at the forearm. Thick suspenders holding up slickers over his thick rubbery boots. I imagined him tethering his rope together after just coming in from trawling earlier that day. Fitting perfectly into my real time wharf scene.
The entire fantasy played out in my in my mind, as the palette of colors danced in real time before me. The one part about this man I envisaged was the depth of his piercing green eyes. I must have known this person in another life to have had such a clear vision of him. I believe the one thing we might both agree upon was the desire to keep chasing the sun. I can understand why so many religions, cultures, and people honor and worship the sun.
